Why does drainage matter for concrete?
Water under a slab freezes and lifts it, water sitting on a slab works into the surface and spalls it, and water running toward a foundation is a bigger problem than either. Almost every durability decision in a concrete project is really a decision about where water goes, which is why every GoldenPaw project includes a drainage and grading assessment before the pour.

What gets looked at during the assessment
Where the roofline discharges and where the downspouts actually land. How the yard falls, and whether it falls toward the house or away from it. Whether there are low spots that already hold water after a rain. What the neighboring grade does, since water does not respect property lines. And what is under the surface, since a slab over saturated clay behaves differently than one over well draining ground.
Pitch is designed, not assumed
A slab needs to shed water in a chosen direction. On lots with natural fall, that often means working with what is there. On flat subdivision lots, which are extremely common across Hendricks, Boone, and parts of Hamilton County, there is no natural fall to use, and pitch has to be built in deliberately. Flat lots are the ones where this gets skipped most often.
The downspout problem
A downspout discharging at the edge of a driveway or patio is a slow motion demolition of that slab. It is also one of the cheapest things in the entire project to fix, and it should appear as a line item in the scope rather than as a shrug.

When a retaining wall enters the conversation
On properties with real grade, holding soil back and controlling where water goes are the same problem. That is frequently where a poured retaining wall stops being a separate idea and becomes part of the patio design.

Do you offer grading or drainage work on its own?
No. Grading and drainage correction that is part of making a concrete project work properly is quoted within that project. We do not offer excavation or grading as a standalone service.
My yard is completely flat. Is that a problem?
It means pitch has to be designed rather than borrowed from the natural grade, and it is the situation where getting it wrong is most common. Flat lots dominate large parts of Hendricks and Boone counties, so it is familiar ground.
Can a new patio make my drainage worse?
Yes, if nobody plans for it. A large new impervious surface has to send its water somewhere, and without deliberate pitch that somewhere can be your foundation. It can equally be an opportunity to fix a pattern that was already wrong.
What if water is already pooling near my foundation?
Say so at the site visit. It changes the design, it may change the sequence of work, and it is considerably cheaper to solve while the ground is already open.
