Broom finish is what most people picture when they picture concrete, and there is a reason it stays the default on driveways and walks.
What it is
A broom is dragged across the surface while the concrete is still plastic, leaving fine parallel ridges. The direction of the drag is a decision, not an accident, and it should be consistent across a slab and coordinated between adjacent slabs.
Where it works best
Driveways, walkways, sidewalks, service paths, commercial flatwork, and any surface that will see de-icers, plows, or heavy traffic. It is also a strong choice for pool decks where traction matters more than pattern.
Why it holds up in Indiana
The texture gives grip when wet or icy, it hides minor surface wear better than a smooth finish, and there is no pattern or color layer to degrade unevenly over years of freeze-thaw cycling and salt exposure.
Maintenance
The simplest of the finishes to live with. Sealing on a sensible interval, care with de-icers particularly in the first winter after a pour, and it largely takes care of itself.
Tradeoffs
It is not a design feature. If the goal is a patio that looks like cut stone or a driveway that reads as a deliberate architectural choice, broom finish is not going to deliver that on its own, though combining a broom field with a stamped or exposed border is a common and durable middle ground.

Is broom finish concrete a good choice in Indiana?
It depends on the surface and on how much maintenance you want to sign up for. Central Indiana freeze-thaw cycling and winter de-icers are hard on every finish, and they are hardest on surfaces carrying a color or pattern layer. We go through this at the site visit with samples on your own property rather than from a card in a showroom.
What maintenance does broom finish concrete need?
Sealing on a sensible interval is the core of it, and the interval differs by finish. Plain broom asks the least. Stamped and colored surfaces ask the most, because there is a color layer to protect. Guidance specific to what you chose is part of the project handoff rather than something you have to go find.
Can this finish be combined with another?
Yes, and it is frequently the smartest option. A broom field with a stamped or exposed border gives you a visual edge where it reads and a durable, low maintenance surface across the area taking the traffic.
Will it match my existing concrete?
Weathered concrete will never be matched exactly by a fresh pour, no matter the finish. Where a close match is achievable we will say so, and where it is not, deciding to contrast deliberately usually looks better than an attempted match that lands close but not quite.
