Why a driveway is not a patio with cars on it, and what should appear in your scope.

Why under-specifying is invisible until it is not

A slab poured thin performs fine for a while. The failure shows up under load concentration, at edges, and after enough freeze-thaw cycling, which means it typically surfaces years after the crew has gone. This is the same reason it is a common corner to cut.

Reinforcement does not prevent cracks

Reinforcement holds a slab together across the cracks that concrete naturally develops, keeping the pieces working as one structure and preventing differential movement. Expecting it to eliminate cracking is expecting the wrong thing from it.

Edges and load concentration

Edges are where slabs are most vulnerable, which matters on driveways where vehicles routinely track along one side, and at the approach where the drive meets the street. Edge detailing is worth asking about.

Base is still the bigger variable

Thickness gets the attention because it is easy to compare between bids. Base preparation matters at least as much and is harder to compare, which is exactly why it should be a specified number in your written scope rather than a description.

What to ask for

Ask for the slab thickness, the reinforcement type and spacing, the base material, and the base depth, all in writing. Any contractor who is building it properly can produce those numbers without difficulty.

Frequently asked questions

Is thicker concrete always better?

Not automatically, and paying for thickness while accepting a poor base is spending money in the wrong place. Specification should match the load, sitting on a base built to support it.

Do I need rebar or is wire mesh enough?

That depends on the load and the conditions on your site, which is exactly why it is specified per project rather than by rule of thumb. Whatever is specified appears in your written scope.
